Minister of Defense Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) gives participation in a French nuclear protective shield a clear cancellation: for Austria, nuclear protection is “no subject at all” and the national position has long been clear. Protection by Sky Shield would be all the more important.
On the occasion of the approval of 75 BundeSher -soldiers on the UN -Vredesmission in Lebanon, the minister confirmed that, despite her military neutrality, Austria was a “very credible partner” in international security policy. “We have constantly contributed to peace operations since 1960 and are anything but running riders,” Tanner explains.
“If you want peace, you have to prepare”
In the light of possible threats, for example by Russia, Austria had to be “able to defend” again. “If you want peace, you must also prepare,” says Tanner. This also includes the modernization of the barracks, with which the domestic construction sector in particular can benefit.
Technological progress in the military area was also taken into account in the 2032+ development plan. “We want to invest in drones and drone defense and acquire the necessary skills,” said the minister. The planned European air defense project Sky Shield will protect Austria. One must “not allow” that parts of Austria – “or Vienna or Amstetten” – would not be protected.
Joint purchasing instead of just writing papers
With regard to European security architecture, Tanner emphasized the importance of common tenders to build military skills “faster, more efficient and interoperable”. Europe must be both self -sufficient and resilient, the Minister of Defense said. When asked how faster implementation at European level would be possible, Tanner replies that this is possible “by not only writing papers, but also acting accordingly” and certainly faster.
In particular, the cases between states (government to government), as was now the case with the purchase of the new Untersonal Jets Leonardo M-346, are important, according to the minister. Such processes as well as the new function of an EU defense commissioner and the strengthening of the European Agency (EDA) have already been taken, Tanner explained.
With regard to the purchase, people are “pretty well positioned in Austria,” Tanner said. She referred to the speed of purchasing the helicopter fleet, the transport aircraft and the reworking of the Leonardo Unterschad -Jets.
