Donald Trump is again bent. The new customs club against the European Union must now be postponed. The new respite period would have to do with the words of EU chef Ursula von der Leyen.
In the customs flict with the EU, the US President announced on Sunday to suspend the EU rates in an amount of 50 percent to 9 July from 1 June. In a “very nice phone call” he had told the EU president Ursula von der Leyen that he would meet her request for an extension of the original period.
Europe is ready to push the customs games quickly and determined. “To achieve a good agreement, we need time until July 9,” she added to the Short Message Service “X”. She also spoke about a “good phone call” with Trump.
According to the Leyen, the EU and the United States have the most serious and closest trade relationships in the world. At the beginning of April, Trump himself had set up a 90 -day window for the trade interviews between the EU and the US, which would end on July 9.
Trump responded on Sunday in the US state of New Jersey shortly before he departs at the Presidential Machine Air Force One. Van de Leyen called him and asked for an extension of the deadline. “She said she wanted to start serious negotiations,” said Trump. “I agreed and she told me that we will meet quickly and see if we can find a solution.”
Trump provided long faces
On Friday, Trump threatened the EU surprisingly with punishing rates of 50 percent from 1 June and fed the customs dispute further. That would be five times as much as the current custom of ten percent on most products. A higher percentage of 25 percent, on the other hand, already applies to cars or aluminum. The American president was not very compromising. “I’m not looking for a deal,” said Trump in the White House.
He justified the drastic step with fixed negotiations. European products would probably be considerably more expensive in the United States if the high punitive rates should actually take place.
Despite Trump’s claims, however, it seemed unclear whether the new fine costs would enter into force at the EU imports as announced with such a short period. In the past, Trump has regularly threatened with high rates – and then completed a U -Turn. Sometimes the Republican probably only uses its customs limit threats as a negotiating tactics.
What’s on the table?
To make the current trade conflict harmless, the EU has already offered an agreement with mutual cancellation of all rates for industrial goods. Until now, the Trump government has not responded to this. In addition to customs agreements, new agreements are an option. According to the EU committee, for example, the EU and Trump can conclude a new deal to expand the American export of liquid gas (LNG). It would also be possible to import more military technology and agricultural products to reduce the US trade shortage with the EU.
What happens when the negotiations fail is unclear. In Austria, both Minister of Economy Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP) and the Industrial Association (IV) had already called for agreement within the European Union at the end of last week. That is the “best answer” for the requirements of Trump.
