The Ukrainian war and the approaching withdrawal of the United States from the European Security Architecture make the alarm bells stark on the old continent. Numerous states are now striving to invest en masse in defense. NATO Secretary -General Mark Rutte expects the members of the military alliance to agree in June in June, even during a defense edition of five percent of the economic output.
“We need that, otherwise we will never really reach the skills goals that we have to achieve,” said the Dutch before NATO parliamentary meeting in Dayton (OHIO) in the US. He therefore assumes that at the top in The Hague in June you will have a higher goal for Defense expenditure – “in total five percent”.
Classic Defense expenditure and infrastructure
According to Rutte, considerably more than three percent of five percent costs must be paid to traditional defense expenditure – in internal documents there is a matter of 3.5 percent. The difference can therefore be defense extension -for example for militarily usable infrastructure, such as railway lines, tank -compatible bridges and extensive ports.
Trump has called for an increase in years
US President Donald Trump calls on NATO partner states to increase defense budgets for years. Already during his first term in the White House, Republican threatened to no longer help states that “their obligations to the United States” would not have fulfilled in the case of a security threat.
