Thousands of affected people – Ukrainian children are worried about family administration

Date:

The family allowance for displaced Ukrainians expires in November 2025. The association “Styria helps” is alarm – thousands of children would slide below the poverty line. Family Minister Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) requires those who have been affected to participate in the labor market.

The case of a Syrian family with eleven children, who relates 9,000 euros in social assistance per month, lets the waves go up. At the same time, it is saved elsewhere, which again causes resentment: the family allowance for around 88,000 refugees Ukrainians in Austria – including 26,500 minors – will soon expire.

Association calculates: 213 euros per person
A hard blow to the affected, says Marion Bock of the association “Styria helps”: “Then a Ukrainian woman with two children would have a monthly family budget of 213 euros per person. This means that everything must be purchased from diapers to tinkering and public tickets.” Her calculations show that many families threaten life below the poverty line.

The Bizarre: Until now, the help has always been analogous to the displaced status of the refugees. A status that not only guarantees that Ukrainians have access to basic care, but also to the labor market – in contrast to asylum seekers. Although this is still valid until March 2026, the aid will expire in November 2025.

Minister sets conditions
The reason: Minister of the Claudia Plakolm family (ÖVP) wants to bind government benefits to conditions such as employment or AMS report. “If you want to live with us, you have to be part. That means learning the German language, working and sticking to our values.” A follow -up plan is used.

Bock answers: “Austria has long been the center of the life of these families. People work here, the children go to school here. Others would like to work, but do not receive childcare.” According to studies, around 30 to 40 percent of the displaced people are employed.

The end of the services would hit children with disabilities particularly hard, says Bock. Until now, they were entitled to an increased family administration and they would have an average of 400 euros less from autumn. “We know families who have already returned to Ukraine,” says Bock. She will continue to fight for every cent.
