Russian threat – New goals: NATO -countries keep upgrading

Date:

The Ukrainian war and the Trump government are increasingly putting NATO under pressure. In order to increase the defense capacity of the transatlantic military alliance, the currently valid goals for members must be en masse – which again means extra investments in billion dollars.

In the future, considerably more outrageous marching aircraft and drones, as well as capacities in areas such as air defense and artillery, must be stored. To ensure that the requirements are reached, the Member States are now assigned new national planning goals. They must be formally accepted this Thursday at a Minister of Defense in Brussels.

As the German press agency has learned from Alliance circles, the currently valid goals must be increased by around 30 percent. However, this will offer many states with a particularly big challenge, because the people who have been valid so far have not yet been reached.

The percentage of the gross domestic product of a state used for the defense budget is also closely linked to the fulfillment of the goals. The US government is particularly busy with the Alliance partners about this question. As is known, President Donald Trump has indicated several times that the United States would no longer help in defaulting partners in the case of a security threat.

Trump demands five percent of GDP for defense
Trump demands that NATO countries invest five percent of their economic output in Defense. NATO Secretary -General Mark Rutte has recently demonstrated that NATO countries will correspond to their next top at the end of June. According to Rutte, considerably more than three percent of five percent costs must be paid to traditional defense expenditure – in internal documents there is a matter of 3.5 percent. The difference can therefore be defense extension -for example for militarily usable infrastructure, such as railway lines, tank -compatible bridges and extensive ports.
