The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) arrived on Thursday evening in Washington. In the late morning (local time, 5:30 PM CEST) he will meet US President Donald Trump in the White House. A lunch and a press conference are planned.
The focus of the meeting will focus on the war in Ukraine, NATO’s response to the growing threats and customs duties between the US and the EU. Merz said that he was not confident as a “plea” for Washington and the European functions.
Since he took office four weeks ago, the German federal Chancellor spoke with Trump several times – both in pairs and in a larger group with various other European state and government bosses. The two now speak with their first names and are regularly in contact with SMS.
Merz also called Senskyj
In terms of schedule, Merz is only about 17 hours in the American capital. The Ukrainian President Wolodyymyr Senskyj said in the meantime that he was calling Merz before the trip. It was a faster implementation of the similarities made last week during his visit to Berlin, Senskyj said Thursday. Merz had promised Senskyj German financial aid, so that Ukraine can build weapons with a high range faster.
Senskyj also emphasized that strict sanctions against Russia were necessary. “Russia really needs the feeling that war is worse than peace. And that is why we need sanctions, especially against the oil trade.” So far, Trump has not built up any extra pressure on Russian leadership. However, a sanction package in the Senate is in the making.
