Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has asked for a greater role within the EU for her country. “The role of Italy is not that of a spare wheel for France and Germany,” emphasized the 48-year-old.
During an event in Rome, the chairman of the Fratelli d’Italia (brothers of Italy) emphasized the importance of good relationships with Germany and France, but according to her it was not a “junior partner” for both countries. “I’m a bit more ambitious,” said Meloni.
Since the autumn 2022, the Fratelli chairman has been the head of a coalition of three rights and conservative parties in Rome.
In recent days, both Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and President Emmanuel Macron of France have visited her. The relationship between Meloni and Macron has been considered striking in recent months. The head of the government maintains good contacts with US President Donald Trump.
“Collaboration under the same” demands
Meloni said that some of them wanted to encourage Italy in a role as a “junior partner” in Germany and France. But that cannot be done with her. She added: “Italy must remember that it is a large country, an economic power, founding member of the EU and NATO.”
If you are aware of your own weight, this is also recognized elsewhere. Italy must demand a “collaboration under the same”
