Alfred Stingl Spö was mayor of Graz for 18 years. On 29 May he died a day after his 86th birthday. He was considered the social conscience of the city. On Tuesday the family, the political companion and the citizen said goodbye to the Graz Central Cemetery.
A veil of grief has been over Graz for a week. But not only the victim of the murderous Spree commemorates the city, but also the former mayor and honorary citizen Alfred Stingl. “Let’s hope this, we won’t keep together. He would have liked that,” warned Peter Grabensberger, who was a spokesperson for Stingl Press for eleven years.
Many more people than there is a comfortable space in the church on the Graz Central Cemetery, said goodbye to Stingl on Tuesday afternoon. He died in Graz on May 29, one day after his 86th birthday. From 1985 to 2003, Stingl led the fortunes of the city. His good friend and federal President Eerde his many merits: “For me, Alfred Stingl is a synonym for a very worshiped person, a convinced Democrat, a grazer who came from the employee movement that served the city and the social -democratic community of lawyer.” Since 1962, when Stingl became the State Secretary for the Young Generation, the two were known. “His climb was gradual, but consistent and stable, as with a real mountain climber.” And there are many mountain tours that fishermen “with Alfred and Elli and Margit and I remember”.
