NATO has seriously shortened the duration of the top in The Hague in the coming week. Instead of three days, the meeting of the heads of state and the government must now only last two and a half hours. The reason for this: US President Donald Trump.
Trump recently left the G7 top in Canada, according to him because of the situation in the middle East. This must now apparently be prevented at the upcoming NATO top. The meeting was drastically shortened to prevent the US president from getting boring and this time he left prematurely. This said three officials about “Financial Times”.
It is about “making the top as small and concentrated as possible,” said a civil servant, “with little room for disorders.” The heads of state and the government are now invited to an informal dinner on the Dutch royal couple on Tuesday evening. The work session of two and a half hours takes place on Wednesday.
Trump’s five percent specification
The subject of conversation will probably be the defense expenditure for which goals must be decided. The US government wants NATO countries to spend five percent of their economic output for defense. Trump had threatened to no longer protect allies if they did not commit to it.
At the top, a proposal from NATO Secretary -General Mark Rutte must now be discussed that military expenditures from 2032 should be at least 3.5 percent of the economic output. 1.5 percent must also be spent on Defense relevant infrastructure. Residual wind comes from Spain, for example. Such an obligation would ‘not only be unreasonable, but also counterproductive’, the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez criticized in a letter to Rutte.
