Debate in Brussels – EU: if it doesn’t merge, it should not be a hamburger

Date:

If the EU minister of agriculture on Monday on Monday can cause a bizarre dot on the agenda. For some ministers, including Norbert Tettschnig (ÖVP)-it is literally about the sausage: terms such as “tofu sausages” or “vegetarian citizen” must be banned.

Instead of bringing agriculture to the climate course or promoting fair livestock farms, you will also discuss what you can call the correct one at ministerial level in Brussels next week. Because some people want to run the “plant pressure plate” of the “Veggie Schnitzel”, or have the “brat roll” made from “tofu sausages”-again!

Apparently, not all consumers who were misleading were recovered from the traumatic experience since the last attempt to ban them in 2020 that they accidentally eaten something without animal proteins. Because the most important argument of the prohibition supporters with the background of the agricultural lobby is: people can confuse vegetarian products with meat products.

Irr garden in the supermarket
Imagine: a pack of “soy sausages” is on the shelf, clearly labeled, also a huge green “vegan” sticker, but the average consumer grabs tragic and only notices when eating “moment, that’s not a real cheese rainer”! It probably doesn’t work that way. Conversely, nobody has been furious about the name “Meat Tomato”, “Sun Milk” or “Satzen”.

Fundant Consumers
According to consumer surveys, a vast majority of the EU population has no problem with the names. The European Court of Justice has already established that existing labeling requirements are completely sufficient. The Association for Consumer Information (VKI) in Austria even warns that a ban would lead to confusion – because consumers then no longer know what to buy.

Meat consumption has been falling for more than 15 years – not just in Austria. While health and climate experts advise a higher plant in our diet, politicians want to maintain the world order of the meat industry in which the word clamps manage. Instead of wiping your back on animal transports and complete column floors and promoting sustainable, regional, animal -friendly meat production, you will come across product names in a small part of the cooled plank.

Time for the supplies
Perhaps it is reassuring to know that European agricultural policy does not have to be with complex questions such as the death of species, soil consumption or the future of farms. Apparently there is still time for the supplies: linguistic purity on the cold store. And who knows that the climate change tastes a little less bitter if the vegetarian hamburger is correctly labeled in the future as a “vegetable fascinated in frying”.
