Hungary Premier Viktor Orban has given a warning shortly for the planned but forbidden by the government in Budapest. Participants and organizers would threaten legal consequences. Countless top European politicians announced a visit to the traditional event out of solidarity.
The pride will take place on Saturday. Orban orders everyone to adhere to the rules, Orban said on State Radio on Friday. Otherwise there are clear legal consequences. Orban added that the police could solve a forbidden event. Hungary, however, is a civilized country and the task of the police is to convince people to follow the law.
Protection of children as an excuse
The Hungarian Parliament led by the National Conservative Fidesz party of Orban in March adopted a law that gives the police the legal basis for the prohibition of LGBTQ -Marsen. The reason was the protection of children who overwrite the right to a meeting. But the liberal mayor of Budapest announced that Hungary would now organize the Parade as a municipal celebration of freedom. Previously, more than 30 countries, including Germany, France and Great Britain, and the EU Committee Hungary committee had asked to allow the parade.
Orban compares EU with the Soviet -Union
Orban now compared the profession of EU President Ursula von der Leyen with instructions from Moscow at the time of the Soviet Union. “Just like Moscow, she sees Hungary as a subordinate country and believes that she can order the Hungarian at Brussels how to live,” said Orban.
Critics see Orban’s approach as part of a campaign against democratic freedoms before the 2026 elections, in which Fidesz must be confronted with a reinforced opposition. The government of Orban pursues a strict Christian-conservative agenda and has established different laws in the last ten years that limit the lives of LGBTQ people.
The “Budapest -Crots” has been taking place for three decades and is the counterpart of Christopher Street Day events (CSD) such as the Berlin pride. Traditionally it includes the Boulevard Andrásy út in the heart of the capital.
Countless top European politicians have announced that they want to participate in Budapest -pride of solidarity, including various MEPs from Spö, Greens and Neos. Representatives of countless amnesty sections also participate, for example from Austria, director Shoura Hashemi.
