Shooting – Merz & Stocker speaking in Berlin with one voice

Date:

Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) of Austria and his German counterpart Friedrich Merz (CDU) showed political unit on Friday at their first bilateral meeting in Berlin (see video above). Migration, Israel, Iran- The two neighboring countries clearly contract on central foreign and safety issues.

NATO, mandatory military service, taxes. These topics are currently the public debate in Germany. “Austria is only interested in Files on the Brenner Autobahn will soon be,” says a CDU member of the “Krone” on the sidelines of the first bilateral visit by Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) on his German counterpart Friedrich Merz (CDU) in Berlin-A Wink-Based Reference, that is also also this time.

Inaugural visit as a signal effect
Apart from that, the two heads of the government mainly sprayed one thing: unity. The visit to Stockers was officially a visit to stock – more politics but more: a signal closed attitude in European migration policy. “We spoke the same language in Brussels,” said Merz, referring to the EU top, which took place this week. “And I don’t mean German.”

Stocker praises Merz ‘course
Together with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Merz and Stocker presented themselves as the clock of a more limiting course. “Austria has pointed out the problem long enough. It is good that these warnings are now being taken seriously,” said Stocker, who expressly praised Merz’s course. The goal is not to protect the internal limits, he said, “But if it requires the need, I have a complete understanding of it.”

The two were also closely on the subject of Israel: they gave a push from different EU countries to suspend the association agreement with Israel because of the Gaza procedure. “You would break a bridge. And that doesn’t help anyone,” says Stocker.

Just like Stocker, Merz is new – and is currently shifting its foreign policy profile. Within ten days: G7 in Canada, the NATO summit in The Hague, EU meeting in Brussels between Paris, Warsaw, Kiev.

Requirements for Iran
The geopolitical situation was therefore also a central subject in Berlin. Of course also the situation in the middle east. “Tehran’s striving for nuclear armament has already done enough disaster,” said Merz. “Iran may not heat up the conflict and the nuclear program – the country must return to the negotiating table. We will contribute to our part.” Stocker used the framework to bring Vienna back into play as a place as a place – a suggestion that opened open ears at Merz.

And so this visit came between neighbors, as he started: emphasized empty and friendly.
