Women Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner (Spö) speaks for a fairer distribution of parental leave between women and men. The current government program does not provide for compulsory regulations in this area, but reconsideration is required from the minister’s point of view.
“If we want more equality, we will have to think about the distribution of maternity leave in Austria,” she said in a conversation with the APA.
The “All Men Make Half-Halbe” campaign was launched 30 years ago-a symbol of how long the subject is present. Many men want to go pregnancy leave today, but would be stigmatized, said Holzleitner. At the same time, women would often be negative if they let their children get from kindergarten. “That has no place in 2025,” said the minister.
Purpose: Equality, security planning and less pay gap
The minister emphasized that she did not want to patronize anyone, but both parents should have the chance to leave them. A fair division has a positive effect on companies – for example due to more planning protection and less discrimination on promotions. This can also help to reduce the gender gender. As a further instrument in this battle, Holzleitner mentioned the EU wage transparency directive, which must be implemented in national -2026 in national law. Details such as the size of the company from which the rules apply are currently still in discussion.
The current government program does not provide for concrete measures for parental leave. However, a working group to strengthen fathers should present ideas at the end of 2026. It is crucial for Holzleitner to promote the social mood for more partnership.
No need for the standard of women, but openness for “social freezing”
Holzleitner certainly rejects an expansion of conscripts to women. “As long as we still have real inequalities in many areas, we don’t have to think about the standard obligation of the women,” she said. In this respect there is also not -party -bound unit.

Together with Minister of Health Korinna Schumann and State Secretary Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig, Holzleitner is currently working on a system that must ensure that the tax reduction actually arrives with consumers.
By the end of the year, the national action plan against violence on women must also be available. The goal is to identify existing gaps in violence and to close them in a targeted way. Moreover, gender budgeting must be better anchored in future budgets.
Holzleitner also argues for more non-party dedication to women’s issues: a successful example of the proposed resolution in the National Council is a reconnaissance campaign about K.-O. drops.
