Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will visit Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) in Vienna on Thursday. The meeting is particularly explosive: it should not only be about illegal migration and energy security, but also Orbán’s controversial statements about “mixed races” and gas chambers.
In a speech at the Romanian spa town of Baile Tusnad on Saturday, Orbán gave a heavily criticized rejection of “racial mixing”. He also caused outrage with a joke in which he alluded to the Nazi gas chambers.
For example, the Auschwitz Committee was “alarmed and shocked” by the tasteless choice of words, and saw Chancellor Nehammer as having a duty to confront Orbán. On Wednesday, the chancellor announced that he also wanted to address the scandalous statements.
Hungary again in conflict with EU
There is also currently a conflict between Hungary and the European Commission over the Rule of Law Mechanism, which the Commission launched in April, partly because of deficiencies in the rule of law and democracy, but also the suspicion of corruption and friendliness in public procurement in Hungary.
At the end of the multi-stage process, the Commission can make a proposal to the Council of EU Member States to cut budgets for Hungary. Aid for the country amounting to 7.2 billion euros from the Corona Development Fund has already been frozen in the dispute.
Great friend of Russia
Moreover, despite the war in Ukraine, Orbán has remained quite pro-Russian and repeatedly opposed EU sanctions. In general, he sees himself in a fight with the West, which wants to impose “foreign values” on his country.
