Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger (Neos) has big plans for Austria. She is currently in New York City to present the Republic for a non-independent seat in the UN Security Council. States such as Austria in particular are currently in danger.
If everything goes smoothly, Austria can get a chair for the period 2027/28. Austria wants to take responsibility again in the most powerful UN committee “for the safety of the law instead of the right of the stronger ones!”, Meinl-Reisinger wrote on X. In New York she meets the UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
In an open debate in the UN Security Council on the subject of “Advancing Adjustment capacity for UN peace operations that respond to new realities”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs also wants to demand the maintenance of the regular international order. “It would be especially dangerous for countries in Austria, especially if the law of the stronger prevailed at the international level of the safety of the law,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs in advance.
The focus of the debate is the geopolitical herd of crisis, especially Ukraine and the Middle East. The Minister of Foreign Affairs in particular wants to emphasize the importance of safety and stability on the Western Balkan.
Chair in the middle of the UN current
Austria has so far been chosen three times in the UN Security Council: in the periods 1973/74, 1991/92 and 2009/10. The choice for the period 2027/28 takes place in 2026. The Domestic Campaign coordinates the diplomat Jan Kickert, who was a constant representative of Austria in the United Nations in New York.
The non-independent members of the UN Security Council are each chosen for two years and have no Veto legislation. There is a regional key for this: Africa each represents three members, the blocks of Asia, Latin -America/Caribbean and West -Europe, two, Eastern Europe.
The follow -up of Denmark sought
Meinl Reisinger also meets her Danish counterpart Lars Løkke Rasmussen in New York for a bilateral work discussion. Denmark is currently one of the non-independent members in the UN Security Council 2025/26. Austria would take the place of Denmark for Western Europe in an election in the committee.
