The Council of Ministers of the Spanish Government will this Monday de official secret accountwhich has a minimum of 50 years to keep the “top secrets” of the state and will entrust the responsibility for the classified information to the ministry of the presidency.
The adoption of the preliminary draft will take place at the last Council meeting before the summer holidays, which will be held in the afternoon, so that the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, can chair it on his return from his tour of the Western Balkans.
Sánchez, in an informal conversation with the journalists about this visit, brought forward the approval of this project and emphasized the relevance that it will replace the current law and that dates from 1968.
The name will be the draft classified information law and will establish four categories of protection: “top secret”, “secret”, “confidential” and “restricted”.
Depending on the category, the terms for declassification of . vary 50 years for top secrets (information considered to be the most sensitive) and four years for limited information, although that period can be extended in some cases.
There is currently no deadline for the disclosure of confidential information.
Spanish government sources emphasize that the determination of these four categories of protection is done in accordance with the common rules between the partners of the EU and the NATO and they emphasize that it is about adapting the treatment of classified information to the constitutional order.
