“It’s about freedom” – 300 million eco-financing against gas dependence

Date:

The Russian invasion war has made many countries heavily dependent on Russian oil and gas. Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler explained in the press foyer after the Council of Ministers that Austria could not end this dependency overnight. With an extra 300 million euros for the promotion of sustainable energy, this should be achieved more quickly, the minister promised.

Austria’s dependence on Russian natural gas put the country in a “particularly difficult situation,” Gewessler said at the press conference. In the past, too little would have been done. “We are being billed for this error today,” said the minister. You have to generate your own energy. “The energy transition is also about independence and our freedom.”

This year, some 300 million euros will be made available for subsidies for small and medium-sized power plants that produce sustainable energy. This money is intended for photovoltaic systems on already built-up areas, wind turbines or the revitalization of small hydroelectric plants. Gewessler calculated that the amount would be enough to set up solar energy systems on 250,000 roofs.

Small and medium-sized enterprises should also benefit enormously
The corresponding regulation was issued on Wednesday and funding can be submitted from April 21. New, innovative projects are also broadly funded, according to Gewessler. If you use land twice, for example for agriculture and energy production, there is more subsidy. Economics Minister Margarete Schramböck emphasized that the funding would bring in around 850 million in additional investment, explaining: “In my opinion, small and medium-sized companies are the biggest beneficiaries of this sustainability offensive.”
