More than a thousand runners will run the Straban Lyford Half Marathon next month, and the event returns after a three-year hiatus.

The popular race is one of only two cross-border half-marathon events in Ireland where Derry and Straban County Council says 1,200 runners will participate.

The second local fraternity is getting excited for one of the Northwest’s most popular half-marathon events to be held on Sunday, May 15th.

Entrances to the event have already opened, and Derry Mayor and Straban County Council, Chancellor Graham Work, have urged runners to confirm their place now to avoid disappointment.

“The Straban Lyford Half Marathon is now firmly established in the local athletics calendar and thousands of people participate and participate in it each year,” he said.

“There is a huge appetite among runners to take part in the big events again, after being forced to run alone or in small groups during lockdown restrictions.

“It will be a very special and emotional moment when I see over a thousand runners of all skill levels return to the starting line and finish the treadmill on a Melvin.

“I know registration started on opening day and the race will be sold out, so I urge the riders to take their places now for as long as possible.”

The half marathon will run from Straban Meeting Street up to the Melvin Sports Complex, while race packages can be collected at the latter on the Friday and Saturday of the previous day.
