The trial for the Super League’s lawsuit against the PGA Tour, in January 2024

Date:

The players of LIV Golf, the Super League funded by Saudi Arabia, who filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour, had to wait nearly 16 months for the case to go to trial. US District Judge Beth Labson Freeman the trial is set for January 8, 2024. Depending on whether LIV Golf’s lawyers move forward with a preliminary injunction – the judge said he has room in his schedule for late September or early October – that means of players of PGA Tours who was suspended for signing with the Arab Super League could spend another year out of PGA Tour events.

Freeman last week denied a temporary restraining order requested by Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones, who want to participate in the PGA Tour FedEx Cup Playoffs. Attorneys for LIV Golf want a trial date of Aug. 7, 2023, arguing that the case needs to be expedited. PGA Tour attorneys said it was unreasonable to prepare adequately, noting that it coincided with the start of the FedEx Playoffs and would be difficult for the PGA Tour commissioner and other executives likely to need testimony.

Freeman set July 23, 2023 as the date for a summary trial, where the tour will likely ask to have the case dismissed. The lawsuit was filed two weeks ago by 11 players, although Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz asked to have his name removed from the lawsuit.
