Dutchman Robert Gesink (Jumbo Visma) is the first leader of the 77th edition of the Vuelta after his team’s good performance in the preliminary team time trial and although he knows his position is short, he “very grateful for the opportunity given to the team.
“The first goal of the team is to win the Vuelta again with Primoz Roglic and that’s why we made this team time trial so strong”, he said after passing the podium to collect the first red jersey of Spanish race.
What he does not doubt is that this lead must be short-lived for him because “tomorrow I will work as usual for Primoz because the goal is for him to win his fourth Vuelta”.
He also recalled that Roglic gave him one of the Vuelta leader’s jerseys at the time, but “it’s special now because I have my own.”
“Dressing as a leader in a grand tour is something I never expected and it’s great for everything I’ve given to the team,” he said.
Regarding the progress of the stage, he recognized that he had to “ask for a lot and sometimes go to the limit to reach the group in a very difficult time trial” and thus cross the finish line in first position. , something that was only decided “in the last 500 meters when we already knew we had the best time”.
Gesink had special recognition for all the public who witnessed the race because it was “incredible, there were many people and we noticed the drive and support of the public”.
