Garcia-Sabalenka and Kvitova-Keys, women’s semifinals in Cincinnati

the french Caroline García eliminated American Jessica Pegula this Friday and qualified for the semifinals of the Cincinnati tournament, where will face Belarusian Aryna Sabalenkawhile the other semifinal will be played by Czech Petra Kvitova against American Madison Keys.

Garcia, number 35 in the world ranking, beat Pegula 6-1, 7-5world number 8, and confirmed the brilliant state of form seen since last June.

The Frenchwoman has won the most matches since then, 25, and downed a Pegula with a perfect record, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of this year’s WTA 1,000.

She will face Sabalenka in the semifinals.sixth favourite, winning 6-4 7-6(1) against China’s Shuai Zhang, world number 44.

The Belarusian, who have won three of the previous four clashes, will return to the semifinals in Cincinnati four years after the last time.

The keys are waitingworld number 24, defeating Kazakh Elena Rybakina, Wimbledon champion.

After defeating the Polish Iga Swiatek, number one in the world, in the round of 16, Keys needed an hour and 31 minutes to defeat Rybakina 6-2, 6-4.

The American, champion of this tournament in 2019, dominated a Rybakina playing excellent tennis in Cincinnati, with 23 service winners and solid victories, including one against Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza.

Keys confirmed as second player with most ‘aces’ in the Western and Southern Open (tournament sponsor since 2008), with 165, behind Serena Williams (211).
