‘Crazy Boy’ Sasaki wins in Austria after a double long lap

Date:

After completing a double long lap that took him from 1st to 21st in five laps, Japanese Ayumu Sasaki, alias ‘Crazy Boy’, took his second victory of the year after a Moto3 race at the Austrian Grand Prix that he won ahead of his compatriot Tatsuki Suzuki and the impressive Sevillian rookie David Muñoz who remained at the top and in the final lap he gave the push to the aggressive Oncu to add third, his second podium in six Moto3 races in his 16 year old .

From pole position for the first time in his World Championship career, rookie Dani Holgado lost the initiative, losing two places to Oncu and Sasaki, with two pending long lap penalties, when his front wheel lifted at the start . Guevara and García quickly overtook Foggia and the three strong men of the World Cup stayed together after the brawl leading the five of the great group. But they won’t have any leading roles this Sunday.

On the third lap Holgado took the lead of the race, when the aggressive Oncu let it go, and from 16th on the grid amazing rookie David Muñoz took the lead on the fourth lap. That made Oncu nervous, after braking he went straight and lost his position.

By the start of the sixth lap Izan Guevara had set the pace at the front ahead of Suzuki and García Dols controlling the aggressive rookies. But after losing those six seconds due to a Sasaki double long lap and making up time lost by Oncu due to his departure from the track, they both rejoined the fastest group of the weekend in just five laps.

From the middle of the race Sasaki started to take the lead, breaking away from the group significantly as both García Dols, Guevara and Foggia had a possible penalty on their heads should they exceed the track limit again. With seven remaining Sasaki and Susuki were half a second behind taking advantage of the battle behind them, but they were unable to complete the breakaway and Oncu and Muñoz stuck with them. Without a slipstream, it would have been impossible for García Dols to pull Moreira, Holgado and Guevara, who had thrown Foggia.

The resolution in four is left for the last turn. Muñoz passed Oncu for third place at turn 4 with the champion braking and then closed the door well and Sasaki was ahead the rest for his second win of the year and they ended up in the same order that signed Muñoz of the fastest race laps. Fifth was Sergio García who increased his lead over Guevara by two points, seventh, with Holgado eighth. Third in contention Foggia finished 12th.

Regarding the rest of the Spaniards, Ivan Ortolá eleventh, Xavi Artigas 14th, Adrián Fernández 18th, and Jaume Masià fell seven short of the final, a zero that condemned him for the fight for the title -he came back and finished 19th- and in the ninth lap Carlos Tatay. 28th Ana Carrasco after serving a double penalty.
