Mariano Garcia, European champion of the 800

Date:

He started running at the age of eight because a stray dog that lived near his house took it for him and wouldn’t stop chasing him and 16 years later, that boy became a European and world champion. Mariano García won the Munich European 800 with an exhibition of power from start to finish. Rivals could do nothing against the Murcian athlete, who after passing the 400 took the lead in 52.06 seconds. On the last lap, rivals tried to chase him down, without success. The closest was Britain’s Jake Wightman, current world champion in the 1,500, who went hand-in-hand with the Spaniards in the final straight, but in the end he finished second. Garcia won with 1’44”85 to add to his brilliant track record the first continental title.

In March he was world indoor champion in a spectacular race in Belgrade where he showed that he could dream of achieving great things. His trainer, Gabriel Lorente -the same one who prepares Mo Katir- adapts his training so that he never leaves town. The Murcian dedicated himself body and soul to the 2022 season to get rid of the thorn last year, when untimely appendicitis forced him to withdraw from the Tokyo Games at the last moment. “I focused on recovering well to avenge my fate. It can be said that this failure gave me more motivation to come back stronger”, he assured.
