Yaroslava Mahuchikh, a gold dedicated to the Ukrainian people

Date:

The high jumper Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchkhnumber one in the European ranking, was announced continental champion at the Munich Olympic Stadium with a score of 1.95 meters and dedicated the victory to his countrymen who had been living with the consequences of the Russian military invasion for six months.

mauchikh, 20, returned to a podium in Munich that he had not recently achieved in international competitions. A year ago he won bronze at the Tokyo Games and this year he won gold at the Indoor World Cup in Belgrade and silver at the outdoor one in Eugene (United States).

All of Mahuchikh’s achievements come at a delicate moment on a personal level given the situation Ukraine has been experiencing since the Russian invasion. He himself went through great difficulties to leave his country in March and compete in Belgrade.

In Munich he took the victory with a jump of 1.95 meters, a record far short of his personal best of 2.06. In fact, he tried to reach 1.97, but failed three jumps.

After his victory, Mahuchikh picked up the Ukrainian flag, went to the sprinter’s track and walked through the stadium part of the stadium excitedly looking at the sky. That tour was done with the Macedonian Marija Vukovic, silver, and the Serbian Angelina Topic, bronze.
