Seriously injured in a horror accident on Salzburg Alpenstraße after an SUV driver lost consciousness. Police had to evict bystanders who had photographed the accident.
Incredible scenes on Sunday evening in the Salzburger Alpenstrae. The driver of a heavy Mercedes SUV lost control of his vehicle about 5:15 p.m. due to a medical emergency and thundered across the oncoming lane to an outside dining area. The car hit several people and injured them – some seriously. Shards of glass everywhere, people screaming, two totally misshapen prams – a horrible sight!
Eight injured, including a child and mother
A total of eight people were injured, three of them – the driver of the accident and a mother with her small child – seriously. “We cannot currently rule out the possibility of death,” said Benjamin Braunstein, the on-duty rescue services officer. Braunstein declined to comment on the driver’s illness, which is believed to have led to the accident. One thing is certain: it is an elderly gentleman from the neighboring Berchtesgadenerland, who was accompanied by his wife.
The horrific accident culminated in a large-scale operation for the rescue service, which was on the scene with two helicopters, a total of four emergency doctors and six ambulances. After the emergency medical care, the operation continued for hours. Numerous eyewitnesses had to receive psychosocial care from the crisis intervention team. The police also had their hands full – unfortunately apart from recording the accident.
Time and again, the officials had to chase away onlookers who were taking photos of the accident site with their smartphones.
“I just heard the bang”
“I just heard the bang. There were immediately a lot of people and a police car. But nobody helped except the police. In the beginning they all just took pictures, even though the injured were screaming,” said an eyewitness. The fire brigade has put up a screen. In addition, a containment circuit had to be built around the wreckage because a large amount of gas was escaping from the air conditioning.
The Alpenstraße was completely closed for the rescue and recovery work. There was no more current information about the health of those affected on Sunday evening.
