Multiple explosions and a fire on the roof of a ten-storey building on a construction site in Hamburg’s HafenCity caused a stir on Friday afternoon. A huge cloud of black smoke rose from the fire and could be seen from afar.
According to the police, the popping noises came from gas cylinders near the explosion of the fire. According to information from the radio station NDR 90.3, building materials had previously caught fire at the construction site.
No one was injured, according to the fire service
The operational manager of the Hamburg fire service said no injuries were reported. Rescue workers took a crane operator to an ambulance, where he was examined by the emergency doctor.
The residents of Hafencity and surrounding neighborhoods were asked to keep windows and doors closed because of the smoke. In the late afternoon, however, no more smoke could be seen. “The fire is out,” confirms a police spokesperson. According to the information, a shopping center is under construction at the site of the fire.
