The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) announced on Tuesday that, starting in 2023, all matches in the first division will have a video assistant referee (VAR), among other reforms.
“In the year 2023, the FPF will implement the VAR system in all matches in League 1 and they will be supervised by external audits,” said the president of the federation, Agustín Lozano, in a press conference gathered by several local media.
He explained that before it is implemented, a commission will start working in October to ensure that all stadiums where professional soccer is played have the infrastructure that allows the use of this technology.
He also pointed out that a percentage of the federation’s funds will only go towards improving the infrastructure of sports venues in both League 1 and League 2 and regional leagues.
Lozano also announced that the tournament will have 19 participating teams in 2023 and there will be no promotion from the Peru Cup (promotional tournament where teams from different categories play) as has happened until now.
In this way, starting next year, only teams that compete in the second category will be able to go up.
The FPF also decided to remove the “minute bag” in League 1 and League 2 by 2023, a measure that forced teams to reach a certain number of game minutes for players under the age of 20, which present since 2008 to favor the quarries of the clubs.
