Andries Jonker, who was assistant to Louis van Gaal at FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich for the men, has been appointed as Netherlands women’s coach to replace England’s Mark Parsons, whose departure was announced by the Dutch Football Federation two weeks ago days after disappointing results for ‘Oranje’, defending champions, at the European Championship in July.
Crowned the European champion in 2017 and finalist in the 2019 World Cup, the Netherlands team was eliminated from the quarterfinals of the European Championship by France after conceding a goal in extra time (1-0).
“Andries Jonker will start immediately as national coach of the Oranje and has signed a contract until the European Championships in 2025,” the Dutch federation (KNVB) announced in a statement.
“At the last European Championship we saw how women’s football developed at an incredible pace in recent years,” Andries Jonker said in the press release after taking the reins of his country’s team.
“We have ambitious goals, but also a lot of quality and talent that we can use for the 2023 World Cup,” he added.
One victory away from the 2023 World Cup
Jonker replaced Parsons in the qualifying phase for the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. A victory over Iceland on September 6 in Utrecht will qualify the Netherlands, first in their group.
Jonker, 59, became women’s coach on an interim basis for a short time in 2001 and managed, among others, men’s Willem II, Wolfsburg and Telstar. He was also Louis van Gaal’s assistant at FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
