UEFA published a technical report on last season’s Champions League in which little attention was paid to the dangerous and disturbing scenes that took place outside the Stade de France in Saint-Denis before the start of the final in which Real Madrid beat Liverpool (1 -0).
UEFA tried to hide the chaos that preceded the match in its report and insisted that its start be delayed by 36 minutes. The European organization then attributed the events to Liverpool fans, saying many of them had the wrong tickets.
However, a report from the French Senate exonerated the fans and concluded that the scenes were caused by organizational flaws while revealing that police officers had misjudged the English fans. Subsequently, the former chief of the Paris police, Didier Lallement, resigned from his position at the age of 65.
The result of the investigation, in September
UEFA also concluded by apologizing to the fans who suffered the chaos at the Stade de France and announced an independent investigation whose results are expected in September. Meanwhile, the European body barely mentioned the incidents in the technical report published today.
Specifically on page 10 it reads: “Despite all the color inside [del estadio], it was a final whose start was delayed for 36 minutes amid harrowing scenes for fans outside. The impact on players having to leave the changing rooms for a second warm-up before kick-off is a moot point.”
