Villarreal’s coach, Unai Emery, was very satisfied with his team’s qualification for the group stage of the Conference League after beating Hajduk in Split (Croatia) on Thursday by 0-2 and featured in the tie they have proven their excellence.
“We have approached the tie with a lot of respect. In the first leg we realized the things we corrected today. We played a very serious and concentrated match and we were able to show our superiority”, said Emery in the post-match press conference.
“Our mission is to score a goal before them, deactivate their game by defending strongly and the team is committed to play a more complete game than we play at home,” he added.
Emery, who revealed that the pitch was not in the best conditions and was “slippery”, emphasized the evolution of his team compared to last week’s match held in Valencia.
“We played a good game there, but we had no respect for the demands and abilities of Hajduk and we worked to prevent this from happening because in this environment, if you let them play, they can turn you back,” he said.
The Villarreal coach does not want to assess how far his team should go in European competition. “We are thinking about the road, enjoying the moments and struggles of each rival and each trip. We’re not talking about the end, and we don’t need to feel like favorites either. Football is living the moments”, he stated.
Furthermore, Emery emphasized the atmosphere they enjoyed in Split. “What he represents on the field with his fans, it’s a shame that he is left behind. I think they deserve it. The atmosphere is wonderful and wonderful.”
