The 2002 US Open begins next Monday in New York, and will do so without Novak Djokovic. The Serbian has not yet received permission from the US health authorities to enter the country and, without being vaccinated against covid, will miss the last Grand Slam.
“Unfortunately, this time I will not be able to travel to New York to play the US Open. Good luck to the other players. I will not get out of shape, keep a positive spirit and look forward to the opportunity to compete again. See you soon world of tennis”. With these words, the Serbian player confirmed his absence a few hours before the draw for the draw held this Thursday.

This decision did not please some. This is the case of Tennys Sandgren, who harshly criticized institutions and their peers.
“Tennis is a selfish and individual sport by nature. Everyone has their own interests and when controversies like this arise, no one raises a finger. Maybe there are some who are happy about Djokovic’s absence in New York, I find it very sad how everyone has acted” lamented the American, one of the tennis players who also admitted not being vaccinated.
“It’s all very sad, the organization didn’t do enough for Novak. They cannot make us think that their voice is worthless and that they have no influence. Such a big and powerful event could influence a regulation change or an exemption for Djokovic. The US Open did not fight for Novak and that is sad and brutal” criticized Sandgren, currently number 427 in the ATP.
