Important day for Alonso’s replacement at Alpine

Date:

Finally, this Monday it’s time to decide the soap opera of the summer. Formula 1’s Contract Recognition Board (CRB) will decide who is right in the contract dispute between the young Australian driver and Alpine.

Hours after Alonso announced his departure from Alpine, the French team announced the promotion of Oscar Piastri, its young academy talent and current reserve driver, to join Esteban Ocon in the F1 team in 2023. However, the Australian He surprised everyone by announcing that Alpine made this decision without his consent and went one step further: he said that he will not drive in Alpine in 2023. All this seems to be because the young Australian has agreed a deal behind Alpine to drive next year for McLaren in Ricciardo’s place. A mess that will now be fixed by the said body.

The Contract Recognition Board (CRB) is a body made up of three independent lawyers from the FIA that validates Formula 1 contracts. Whenever a driver contract is signed, whether it is an official driver, reserve driver or test, the team must present it at said meeting to have a record of it and there is no problem with a driver signing two contracts at the same time. This entity is responsible for keeping safe and decides which contract prevails over another possible document in the event of a dispute, as is the case between Alpine and Piastri.

The Contract Recognition Board (CRB) was created as a result of the huge controversy generated by the legal dispute between Jordan and Michael Schumacher in 1991 over the German’s departure from Benneton just after his Formula 1 debut race with Jordan .

The Board also had to decide on Mika Häkkinen’s departure from Lotus when he signed for McLaren as a test driver in 1993, along with the double contract signed by Jenson Button’s representatives with Williams and BAR in 2005 and another case of Timo Glock, who signed for Toyota with a reserve contract with BMW-Sauber.

“The case will be determined on Monday by the Contract Recognition Board. We have a contract with Oscar, that is why we are announcing him as our driver next year, but he also signed a contract with McLaren and in F1 you cannot sign two contracts . Alpine Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer pointed out on Friday, along with McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl, that he did not want to talk about other drivers. “That’s why the CRB intervenes, it is an official body of the Concord Agreements. The other drivers have tried to do something before. We know that our contract is valid and it is up to the CRB to decide,” added Szafnauer.

What if it was Piastri’s fault?

If the Contract Recognition Board agrees with Oscar Piastri, he will be able to sign for McLaren and leave a seat for free. Otmar Szafnauer has already told ‘DAZN F1’ that “in a couple of days after Monday” they will know who will be the new Alpine driver for 2023. If not Oscar Piastri, for the French team they are ringing again Daniel Ricciardo (who has been with Renault for two years)Mick Schumacher and Pierre Gasly.
