Cornet, who set the record for consecutive appearances in a ‘big’, with 63, dethroned a Raducanu who last year sprung a big surprise by being crowned champion at the age of 18 and being number 150 in the ranking.
He won the double 6-3 at the Louis Armstrong track in one hour and forty minutes and sentenced a Raducanu who defended 2,040 points in the WTA ranking in this tournament.
A semi-finalist last week in Cleveland, Cornet celebrated the sixth victory of his career against a rival part of the ‘top 20’ of the world rankings.
In the second round, Cornet will face Czech Katerina Siniakova.
Naomi Osaka was also eliminated in the first change. The Japanese lost to American Danielle Collins 7-6(5) and 6-3 in the final match of the second day.
Collins and Osaka offered excellent tennis which was accepted by the fans. The Japanese have dominated their three previous meetings, with Collins not taking a set from the Japanese former world number one, falling in two of them in less than an hour.
However, the American, seeded 19th, came out determined and took the tension in the first set in the tie-break 7-5.

The legendary Venus Williams also bid farewell to the tournament42 years old and champion in New York in 2000 and 2001, lost 6-1 and 7-6 (4) against Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck.
For Venus it was participation number 23 in the US Open, a record despite the loss.

The tournament lost on Monday to Romanian Simona Halep, former world number one, who fell to Ukrainian Daria Sigur.
