Comfortable match against Coria for the Murcian, who is already in the third round of the US Open
Improvement point for Carlos Alcaraz who, after an erratic debut at the US Open, accelerated and defeated Federico Coria (6-2, 6-1 and 7-5) to reach the third round of the New York Grand Slam.
The Murcian added his second win in a row against an Argentine tennis player, but far removed from the troubles and doubts Sebastian Báez caused him. Coria, brother of the legendary Guillermo Coria, finalist at Roland Garros in 2004, did not give much effort, as if he saw no options for himself to enter the competition. His claw lasted only four games, causing Alcaraz to break his serve and start a run of ten games to one.
Juan Carlos Ferrero’s pupil again left some doubts about the service, especially in the beginning with six breakpoints that he had to deactivate, confirming that the El Palmar player is not yet 100%. And it is that Coria, a player with no experience on cement, with only thirteen victories on this surface in his career, threatened almost all the services of Alcaraz, although, in situations under pressure, he coped best with himself. He had to make 14 breakpoints – this is the fourth Grand Slam match in which more breakballs have been generated – too many, although he gave up service only once in the twilight of the match. Where he clearly had the upper hand were the winning shots, by over 40. A great positive note after hell to which Báez subjected him in the first round and which only solved the physical problems of the Buenos Aires native.
Alcaraz went over Coria and went from less to more, a climb of stairs needed to gain confidence, rhythm and better tennis for the hot phase of the tournament and that will start from the third round, when bigger rivals arrive on a level playing field . For in the second and third sets, Coria was a shadow that only worked in sparks and did not flinch the Murcian’s racket one iota.
In just over two hours, Alcaraz sealed his second consecutive third round presence at the US Open and will now have a good touchstone, American Jenson Brooksby, who delivered the surprise by eliminating Borna Coric. Brooksby, number 43 in the world, knocked out the Cincinnati Masters 1,000 champion 6-4, 7-6 (10) and 6-1 and will face Alcaraz for the first time.
The 21-year-old American already reached the round of 16 here last year and made the third round at Wimbledon in July. He has three ATP finals to his name, two of which this year on hard courts.
