The American athlete Joe Kovacs Double world champion and current runner-up in the shot put, he gave the fans, in the center of the Belgian capital, a throw of 22.61 meters, the longest achieved at the Van Damme Memorial.
The 7.26-kilogram ball landed beyond the 21-meter line on the first three throws. New Zealander Tom Walsh, the world champion in 2017, took command with 21.60, but in the second Joe Kovacs threw another meter, breaking the Belgian meeting record and leaving the contest doomed.
Since he lost by five centimeters to his compatriot Bryan Crouser in the final of the World Championships in Eugene (Oregon, USA) on July 17, Kovacs won his next four competitions. This is his fifth straight win.
He was joined on the podium in Brussels by two New Zealanders: Walsh, who failed to improve on his first shot, and Commonwealth runner-up Jacko Gill, who shot 21.32. The reigning European champion, Croatian Filip Mihaljevich, finished fourth with 21.13. No one else went over 21 meters.
The Brussels meeting will offer the rest of the program this Friday, already inside the stadium.
