Turkish Deniz Oncu, despite having injured his right arm, took his fourth pole of all time, third of the year and second on Italian soil, taking advantage of the complexity of a qualifying session they faced in slicks and incessant mists. He beat rookie Daniel Holgado by 23 thousandths and another rookie, Diogo Moreira, a KTM hat-trick in the front row, by 24 thousandths.
Moments before the start of Moto3 Q1, it started raining in the pitlane and pouring down other parts of the circuit, complicating and spooking the riders in the fight for the first pole position of the day. Caution, the first provisional pole was marked by Moreira, riding three seconds slower than in FP3, ahead of Guevara. Izan Guevara took the lead in the third lap launched even though he did not even fall below 1’43” and returned to the pitlane to change the rear tire, the only one who followed this strategy. Diogo Moreira regained the provisional pole position (1 ‘ 42 “642) that you keep when you get into the last two minutes.
Without mist Izan Guevara took advantage of the new slick to take the lead (1’42″609) which Moreira (1’42″472) answered with his teammate Yamanaka in 16 thousandths when the checkered flag fell.
But Austrian poleman Holgado finished second and behind him Denis Oncu took the provisional pole (1’42″448), third of the year after Portugal and Italy. Moreira remained on the front row.
Izan Guevara, who will fight Sergio García for the lead this Sunday -five points separate them- starts in fifth and his great rival García Dols in thirteenth, three rows separate them. Carlos Tatay was sixth, Pitito Fernández was tenth, Jaume Masiá was eleventh and David Muñoz was 15th.
Munoz cruises through Q1
Through Q1 they have agreed the fight for poles David Muñoz, who this Sunday if he wins could become the youngest Moto3 winner at the age of 16 years and 112 days taking the record from Maverick Viñales (16 which is years and 123 days). He was accompanied by Fellon, Rossi and Adrián Fernández. Xavi Artigas will start 25th, Ivan Ortolá 26th and Ana Carrasco 31st and last.
