Alcaraz raises level to eighth

Aggressive and precise against Bookksby, the Murcian repeats his presence in this tie at the US Open

Carlos Alcaraz needed such a match to see himself as a candidate for this US Open. An aggressive match, in which he was able to dominate, in which he knew the initiative was in his racket and in which he clearly defeated a dangerous tennis player like Jenson Brooksby (6-3, 6-3 and 6-3) to advance to the round of 16 of the New York tournament.

Alcaraz, with a record of 43 winning shots, gave a recital in his third consecutive game at the Arthur Ashe, the center court of the US Open. It was a display of power from the Murcian, who came out of two erratic first rounds, with many doubts against tennis players inferior to him, and who came out of the minds with his best New York performance yet.

An encounter that revealed the amazing weapons the tennis player from El Palmar has that helped him dismantle a Brooksby labeled as one of the most desperate tennis players on the track. It was not without reason that he ended up in this third round after eliminating one of the underdogs of the tournament, the Croatian Borna Coric, recent champion at the Masters 1,000 in Cincinnati. In his loss, Coric complained bitterly about the continued celebrations of the American, who had no time to pump his fist at an unleashed Alcaraz.

The Murcian chose with a very clear plan to overwhelm the American on the basis of ‘winners’. Failure was allowed, as the goal was not to give Brooksby too much speed and not find the tennis he’s comfortable with; that of passing balls from the bottom and always holding another ball. Alcaraz made 33 unforced errors, too many in any other scenario, but necessary in a game like the one Brooksby would raise.

By attacking, Alcaraz broke the resistance of his rival from the first bars and completed an hour and a half in almost perfect tennis. He only had a disconnect in the middle of the second set that cost him a serve but recovered and accelerated in the next game to print a double 6-3. He had the game under control and started the third quarter 40-15 on service. It was there when he shorted again, this time more serious, as he lost three games in a row, by a partial twelve points to one.

Brooksby’s 3-0, which was also staged to a crowd eager for the match to go on, was a warning for Alcaraz to wake up. And he did it without hesitation. He immediately got the hand back and started scratching games one at a time until he neutralized the American’s lead.

Alcaraz didn’t stop 3-3. His resurgence continued from there and to a 6-0 point that closed the game. Along the way, he left behind some of the best points of the match and a very sweet aftertaste that restores his confidence for the key stages of the tournament. For the second time in his career, the Murcian is in the second week of the US Open and will aim for at least equal quarter-finals from last year.

Alcaraz’s next rival comes from the duel between Croatian Marin Cilic, whom he recently defeated in Cincinnati, and Briton Dan Evans, whom he defeated in their only confrontation last year in Vienna.
