The Galician Jessica Bouzas Maneironumber 57 in the WTA ranking, lost this Wednesday in her first participation in the China Open against the American Peyton Stearns (n.46) by 6-2 and 6-4, in a match that lasted one hour and 27 minutes.
Bouzas Maneiro, 22, struggled on his serve and recorded 8 double faults, which allowed Stearns to capitalize on his break opportunities and convert eight break points.
The Galician managed to break his rival’s serve on five occasions, but his service percentages were not high enough and he won only 41.5% of his first serve points.
Stearns advanced to the second round, where he will face the Canadian Leylah Fernandez (n. 28).
The tournament, of the WTA 1,000 category, features Russian Aryna Sabalenkathe Italian Jasmine Paolini, the Americans Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff, as well as the local favorite, Qinwen Zheng, recent gold medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as the main contenders.
The reigning China Open champion and current number one in the WTA rankings, the Polish Iga Swiatek did not participate this year.
