Atalanta sinks Monza and is sole leader

Date:

Atalanta became sole leaders of Serie A on Monday after beating Monza 0-2 at home, owned by Italian Silvio Berlusconi, in a match where Bergamasco went from less to more yet but where they exploited the weakness of the locals, last in the table without any points to their credit.

Three wins and one draw. The only point Gian Piero Gasperini’s men have left is against reigning champions, Milan. It’s not a brilliant start in terms of the game, but more effectively impossible.

Calmly, without the chaotic continuous attacks that have characterized him so much, ‘Dea’ treads on the safe side and resolves setbacks with great solvency. Before the promoted Monza he did it without the Colombians Duván Zapata and Luis Muriel, key pieces in the scheme.

Monza, without scoring

On the contrary, yes, a Monza that for the first time in its history in the highest category of Italian football has not achieved a point in these five days. It was a powerful clash of dynamics, but the locals withstood the stakes in the first act and entered the break without conceding.

But in the second half the ‘Nerazzurri’ grew, aware of the importance of the victory that meant a single lead. They stepped on the accelerator and within 10 minutes they shut down the game.

Two goals in 10 minutes

First a thrilling goal, as the assistant raised the flag after Danish Rasmus Höjlund’s shot, but VAR intervened and the goal was confirmed.

Once the tension was released, Atalanta, more relaxed and more successful, took advantage of the gaps that appeared behind a Monza that inevitably went for a draw.

Especially in the left lane, occupied by the Frenchman Brandon Soppy -in the second half- and the Nigerian Ademola Lookman, author of the assist for the first goal and the second goal that the referee finally accepted as his own Brazilian defender Marlon’s goal. The former azulgrana in an attempt to clear definitely put the ball in the goal.

Take two points in Naples and Milan

Atalanta took their foot off the accelerator for the rest of the game, knowing they were in the lead. Gasperini’s men are checking the remaining teams from the top of the table after Roma’s drubbing on Sunday against Udinese (4-0) and remain the only team with 13 points out of a possible 15. They are followed by Naples and Milan with 11.

A radically opposite dynamic in a Monza that continues to be engulfed in a major crisis of results and games that urgently need victory.
