Nick Kyrgios is two steps away from repeating a Grand Slam final. Two months after reaching the final round at Wimbledon, the Australian faces off this Wednesday morning (around 3 am) in the quarterfinals of the US Open in Karen Khachanov, a rival he had a few years ago on twitter.
September 2020 when Kyrgios violently attacked Mats Wilander for some words about Andy Murray.
“Shut up Mats, no one cares. Muzz, know that no matter how long you follow, we all appreciate and enjoy your tennis and jokes. And I have never seen a point from Mats Wilander” he wrote on his twitter account, the few words that provoked Khachanov’s intervention.
“Nick come on mate…too much…show some respectThe Russian replied.
So Kyrgios took Khachanov’s advice and they became friends. This is not a joke. Good old Nick proves himself once again with his attack the legendary Swedish former tennis player with these words.
“If someone starts talking bad about one of my people, then I will go after him. Do I respect Mats? Why? For hitting the ball over the net? I didn’t give my respect to that“.
Khachanov, who also wanted to march, picked up the gloves and decided to psychoanalyze Kyrgios.
“I really think you’re a good boy and I have no problem with you. But when you sit at home and write comments about players, I wonder who the real problem is“.
For whatever reason, this comment didn’t sit well with the Australian, who raised the intensity level a bit by writing “I’d like to have an intellectual conversation with you, but I’m not sure it will go beyond how hard you can hit the ball.“.
Khachanov did not agree to endure such an insult and responded with a message that any parent would sign. “Before talking about my brain, read at least one book, instead of playing video games all day“.
Kyrgios responded claiming his humanitarian work during the pandemic. “I also fed the hungry and helped open new facilities to keep kids active. But what a way to investigate, absolutely pelican“.
And there the controversy ended. Hopefully today’s game is mostly entertaining.
