Khachanov ended Kyrgios’ dream in five thrilling sets

Date:

Karen Khachanov raises her arms, cheered by the crowd after reaching her first Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open. On court, Nick Kyrgios vented his frustration on a pair of rackets, moments after the final point of his 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4 loss to Russian, and once, twice, three and four times hit his racket on the ground. Kyrgios was unable to continue his winning streak after defeating defending champion Daniil Medvedev at Flushing Meadows, bowing out in a high-quality quarter-final that began on Tuesday night and ended after more than three and a half hours . , 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Arthur Ashe Stadium. In the end, the crowd cheered Kyrgios awake. At one point in the fourth set, chair umpire James Keothavong implored: “Again, ladies and gentlemen: Respect both players.”

The 27th-seeded Khachanov was 0-2 in major tournament quarterfinals before meeting 23rd-seeded Kyrgios. And he realizes who the fans seem to favor. “I did it! I did it guys. Thank you. Now you guys are giving me some love. I appreciate it,” said Khachanov. “It was a crazy match. I expected it to be like that. I’m ready to run, to fight… That’s the only way to beat Nick, I think,” he added.

Khachanov will face No. 5 Casper Ruud on Friday for a spot in Sunday’s finals. “I’m proud of myself,” Khachanov said. “I was very focused from the beginning to the end.” Both he and Kyrgios, who have powerful serves, combined for 61 aces (31 from Kyrgios). In addition, they showed a figure of 138 total aces (75 from Kyrgios) and two statistics that made the difference: Kyrgios made 58 unforced errors, Khachanov 31.

Kyrgios was a Wimbledon finalist in July and was the favorite to claim his first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows, after ending the title defense of No. 1 Medvedev in the fourth round. Khachanov was unable to play at Wimbledon this year after the All England Club banned all Russian and Belarusian players from playing because of Ukraine’s invasion. Against Kyrgios, he recorded key breaks in the final games of the first and third sets.

After the first set, Kyrgios complained of knee pain and was visited by a physio, but showed no ill effects once play resumed, breaking down early in the second. After two games, he dropped a backhand into the net and sat on his chair, dropping his racket and knocking over a drink, earning him a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Khachanov came within two points of victory as he led 6-5 as Kyrgios served out in the fourth set. The ‘aussie’ endured and dominated the next tiebreaker to force the fifth set. Khachanov then broke early in the final set, took a 3-1 lead and cruised to victory. “The further you go, the expectations go up,” he said. “I have taken a step forward,” he added.

In Wednesday’s quarterfinals, number 3 Carlos Alcaraz will face number 11 Jannik Sinner and number 9 Andrey Rublev will face number 22 Frances Tiafoe. None of the last eight tennis players in the draw have won a Grand Slam.
