After school starts on Monday in the East, children across Austria will soon be back to school. Young people can count on cheaper rates for using public transport.
If you only use the means of transport to go to school, you pay a one-off deductible of 19.60 euros for the entire school year. There are also special offers for the entire state. They apply to students and apprentices under the age of 24.
I’m Eastern Region Transport Association (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland) children pay 79 euros annually for the top youth ticket for the three federal states. In Upper Austria the low-cost ticket costs the same for the school year. The south is more expensive: In the Styria fall 123 euros, in Carinthia 109 euros. In front of Tyrol the ticket costs 99.80 euros, for Salzburg 96 euros.
In Vorarlberg you can buy tickets for areas of different sizes. The federal offer (103 euros) also includes the ÖBB Vorteilscard (otherwise 19 euros). There are also cheaper rates around 91 euros or 36 euros, but these do not apply to the whole country.
Free ride under conditions
Note: If you only have the free school ticket of 19.60 euros, you can only use it to go to school on school days. In your spare time and for other trips, students then have to pay for individual trips or buy the more expensive ticket, in which the deductible is already included.
Anyone under the age of 24 who is also entitled to child benefit is eligible. The primary residence must be in Austria and the child must attend school at least four times a week or the pupil must attend school at least once a week.
If you don’t have your ticket yet, you can often continue to use your old card, as it is valid until September of the new school year.
