The defeat of Serena Williams in US Open on Friday, in what was likely the final match of his illustrious career, the most-watched tennis broadcast in the 43-year history of ESPNthe TV network announced.
Williams’ third-round loss to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York was average 4.8 million viewers between 7:15 pm and 10:30 pm and reaches its maximum 6.9 million viewers at 10:15 pm American (Eastern) time.
Winner of 23 Grand Slam singles tournaments, Williams transcended the sport, and her apparent departure from competitive tennis to focus on raising her family and business interests has led to an outpouring of tributes from athletes, celebrities and politicians.
Williams’ three singles matches and one doubles match against Venus helped boost viewership over the first five days of the tournament, averaging a 1.1. million viewers tuned into ESPN networks, 101% more than in 2021.
A spokesman for the network, whose team of commentators and analysts includes former world number one Chris Evert, John McEnroe and Caroline Wozniacki among others, said last week that ESPN would be happy to add Serena on this roster when she retires.
