Yokasta Valle unifies the WBO and IBF titles at 105 pounds

Date:

The Costa Rican Yokasta Valle defeated Vietnamese Thi Thu Nguyen by unanimous decision on Thursday to unify the titles of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) at 105 pounds.

Valle, who dominated all 10 rounds of the fight, entered the fight as the IBF champion and fulfilled his dream of facing the WBO titleholder and snatching his belt.

The Costa Rican jumped into the ring very aggressively in front of 6,000 fans who filled the seats of the Heiner Ugalde Arena, in San José, in an atmosphere worthy of a world title fight.

The first four rounds were dominated by Valle, who hit his combinations on numerous occasions to the head of the Vietnamese.

Nguyen showed strong resistance to punches but was unable to deliver on his terms, and was even booked once by Argentine referee Mario González for hitting him in the head.

Valle, dubbed the “people’s champion”, continued his full repertoire of blows to the head and side of the Vietnamese, staggered on several occasions from the punishment he received.

In the final two rounds, Nguyen looked to react, but Valle was in control with proper straights and consistent 1-2 combinations to the head preventing any surprises from the Asian.

The 30-year-old Costa Rican boxer raised his record to 24 wins (8 by KO) and 2 losses, he hasn’t lost since June 2018 and has a 10-fight winning streak.

For his part, the 25-year-old Vietnamese recorded his first loss as a professional on Thursday after earning 5 wins (1 by KO).
