A thousand gendarmes and police were mobilized this Tuesday in Marseille on the occasion of the Champions League match between the Vélodrome team and Eintracht Frankfurt. At least 8,000 German supporters are expected, Bouches-du-Rhone police headquarters said. Marseille is on alert for possible disruptions due to Tuesday’s meeting.
CRS (Republican Security Companies), mobile gendarmes and Departmental Security Police (DDSP) were deployed gradually in the city. Since Monday evening, German and Marseille fans have sought each other out in the city center and a fight broke out between around twenty of them by the end of the night. In total, eight people were arrested, including one German, mostly for carrying a weapon or for disobeying law enforcement.
Around the Vélodrome, several thousand Eintracht fans without tickets are expected, about 5,000 according to the authorities’ estimates. The Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture issued several orders prohibiting German supporters, in particular, from moving into the city center.
The stadium was almost full, about 62,000 spectators. Marseille mobilized 1,200 people for security.
Last season, on the occasion of several European matches for Marseille there were incidents, outside or inside the Vélodrome: in the matches against Galatasaray, Basel, PAOK Thessaloniki and Feyenoord.
Last Thursday, violent clashes between Cologne and Nice fans at the Allianz Riviera stadium once again raised the issue of security around football.
