Alicante Sandra Alonso and the Victorians Oier Lazkanotwo of the cyclists who open this Sunday the Spanish participation in the Road Cycling World Championships in Wollongong (Australia), are “very eager” to face the elite time trials where the competition will begin.
“I’ve only been here for a few days and I’m not one hundred percentbut I want to do the time trial, do it well, give everything for it”, said Lazkano, the only Spanish representative in the men’s category.
The man from Alava, fifteenth at the European Championships last month in Munich (Germany), is clear about the difficulties of “a technical time trial, with many 90-degree corners and where maintenance will not be easy of continuous rhythm.”.
“It will be start-stop, start-stop and all you have to do is try to brake as little as possible in the curves but without falling”, promoted the Movistar runner, 22 years old and runner-up in Spain in the specialty in statements distributed by the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC).
Alonso, for his part, faces the competition “with great enthusiasm” because he believes that it is a discipline in which he will “improve a lot in a short period of time”.
“This year I ran all the time trials I could. I think that’s important, because it’s a discipline where to improve you have to run it, not just train it, and I consider it another opportunity to continue developing, to give everything and apply what’s learned which i got from chronos before. It is a discipline where I think I can adapt well in the future and where I want to work hard”, appreciates the runner who was born in Mexico and has been a resident of Torrevieja since he was a baby.
The 24-year-old cyclist, from the Ceratizit-WNT Pro Cycling team, explained that the time trial route of 34.2 kms. for both men and women, “it is mainly characterized by the absence of essential straight lines”, since “the longest is around a kilometer and there is only one such length”.
“There are many curves and it is very entertaining, although the road is quite wide and the turns are not too tight and can be merged. I like it, it’s a playful route, it’s not about going full throttle all the time. In addition, it is important to remember that this is a very long test (for girls). Normally we will not go beyond 25 km and this time we will go over 30″, he summed up the race that awaits him.
While in the men’s category, Lazkano is the only Spanish representative in the elite time trial, in the women’s Sandra Alonso will be joined by Lourdes Oyarbide, also from Alava, from Egino, who already has experience in the World Cup. Lazkano and Alonso started in a World Cup time trial.
