Brighton announced on Sunday the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as a replacement on the bench for Graham Potter, who left the club ten days ago to take the reins at Chelsea. The 43-year-old Italian coach signed a four-year contract.
De Zerbi began his coaching career in the Italian lower leagues before coming to the attention of Sassuolo in 2018, guiding them to eighth place in Serie A in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. A success that led him to manage Shakhtar Donetsk last year, which was interrupted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“I am really pleased that Roberto has agreed to be our new manager. Roberto’s teams play exciting and daring football and I am sure that his style and tactical approach will suit our team very well,” said by Brighton chairman, TonyBloom.
For his part, Paul Barber, executive vice president of Brighton, revealed that “we reviewed several excellent candidates, but Roberto was our number one option from the beginning and the only one we spoke to. We believe Roberto is cultural and technically the best choice for Brighton and the right person to continue to take the club forward with its existing talented players.”
Brighton are fourth in the Premier League with 13 points from six games and travel to Liverpool on October 1 after the national team break.
