Karolina Pliskova, seeded seventh, defeated Isabella Shinikova 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the Pan Pacific Open on Tuesday.
In other games played behind closed doors due to the passage of Typhoon Nanmadol in Tokyo, the Mexican Fernanda Contreras Gómez defeated 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, 7-6 (7) and 6-4and China’s Zhang Shuai defeated Japan’s Mai Hontama, 6-0, 6-3.
