Carlos Alcarazcurrent world number one and recent US Open winner, leads the main draw of entries in Acapulco Mexican Tennis Openwhich celebrates its 30th anniversary from February 27 to March 4, 2023.
The tournament director, Raúl Zurutuza, announced on Tuesday the presence of Alcaraz, champion of the US Open after defeating the Norwegian. Casper Ruudsecond in the ATP, also registered at the Mexican Open.
The ATP 500 tournament also features the Greek SThefanos Tsitsipassixth in the world and finalist in 2021.
Acapulco is the main tournament in Latin America and one of the favorites for players who will use it in 2023 to prepare for the Masters 1,000 in Indian Wells, which starts two days after the final in the Mexican resort.
Zurutuza admitted that it was not difficult to finalize Alcaraz’s presence because the tournament trusted the Spaniard when he was 17 years old and gave him a ‘wild card’ (invitation), in addition to having a good relationship with his team.
The director of the Acapulco 500 said that in the first 30 years of the Mexican Open, Spanish players have been great entertainers, with figures such as Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, with four titles each, Carlos Moyà and Nicolás Almagro, with two, and Francisco Clavet , with one.
“The Spaniards have been the stars since the first final where Carlos Costa played alongside the Austrian Thomas Muster. The tournament has a very good relationship with them and I hope it continues for many more years,” he said.
The main players of the last three decades went through the Mexican Open, except the Swiss Roger Federer, who always gave priority to the Dubai tournament, on the same date.
Zurutuza said that although he was not at the Open, the winner of 20 Grand Slams came to an exhibition with the German Alexander Zverev, which gathered more than 42,500 attendees, in 2019.
The Open will take place on a hard court and, as the manager indicated, it will have other top tennis players to confirm in the coming months. “It will be a great party,” confirmed Zurutuza.
