The driver from Madrid faces the final leg of the 2022 Formula 1 season with enthusiasm and one goal: to win at least one more race
Carlos Sainz is aware that the 2022 season has not been easy at all, neither for him nor for Ferrari. The word “mistakes” is repeated in much of the conversation he had with us on a lightning trip to Madrid, taking advantage of the three-week break until the Singapore Grand Prix, which will kick off the campaign’s resolution.
Sponsored by his personal sponsor who was already with him before he came to F1, Estrella Galicia, he answers questions from the Colpisa agency and bit his tongue a little not to blame his team, but without stopping say what he thinks: are the team that beats Red Bull, they need to take a step forward and improve significantly on many points. Without those issues, especially early in the season (but not just there), he wouldn’t be arriving at a discreet fifth position in the championship at this point in the year, but much higher. He is aware of this and has only one clear goal: to win at least one of the remaining six dates.
-How do you feel for this season finale?
to the top There are six sprint races because we will also be traveling a lot. First Singapore, Japan, then America, Brazil, Abu Dhabi… It’s races that I like and enjoy, so I’m looking forward to it.
-It was not an easy season at Ferrari, with many mistakes. Has he bitten his tongue a lot or does he absorb it naturally? How did you experience it?
There are problems in all teams. Different challenges, mistakes you end up paying for during a year of F1. I’ve lived here for eight years and every team has made mistakes like this. Even pilots like me make mistakes, all of us. What you have to do is learn from them, try to improve, make the team stronger, stick together as a team and improve for next season.
-How is your relationship with Charles Leclerc?
It is well. I get on well with Charles. We are two people who have a lot in common, we have fun outside the tracks and in that we respect each other and we compete hard. I get on really well with him, I really do.
-He arrives in Singapore 16 points behind Russell and Mercedes pushing very hard. Is the goal from here to the end to beat him?
Yes… but I would give more priority to winning one or more races than to position in the World Championship because I know how many points I lost due to reliability or mistakes made at the start of the season when I was taken off the track a few times… In these last six races I’m going to prioritize race by race to win them more than going for the World Cup, because I know that points have been lost due to external causes.
-Do you feel satisfied with seven podiums, including one with victory, in this season?
It’s a difficult question to answer. I think I made good progress all season. That first win is something I’m very proud of, it’s something that makes you really excited as a driver to get your first win, but I think the season has been a bit complicated, especially because we had a bit of bad luck at the beginning had bad luck, with a lot of zeros, so I fell into the championship. Then it’s true that I got a lot better, but things kept happening. There have been many podiums, a win has been won, so I can’t complain.
-What balance do you make of the new technical regulations introduced this year?
I think it helped in a lot of ways, especially in the show, which was searched for. There’s more overtaking, we can get closer and it’s been a really fun year for Formula 1, especially Silverstone (which he won) in particular. If we can continue to lighten the cars and make them faster, we will make Formula 1 even better.
-Your father is already preparing the Dakar 2023…
I see him with the same enthusiasm and desire as I did 15 years ago. At the age of 60 he will have the chance to win the Dakar again and I see him prepared and motivated to do it again, which would be something incredible and inspiring.
-After seeing how Red Bull dominate in general, what does Ferrari need to improve to overtake them?
During. What we have to consider is a year with fewer errors, better reliability and better work overall. If you want to beat a team like Red Bull you have to be perfect and they showed us this year that if someone wants to beat them in 2023, we have to do it this way.
-When you think about that 2023, what is the bar that will be set?
I drive all races and all seasons with the goal of winning, that’s what I want as a driver and what I have to consider if I want to be the best and number 1 one day, which I would be most excited about, what I work for every day and what I think about when I go to sleep.
